"Beethoven & Bruckner" 20th March 2010
Programme includes: Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major and Bruckner Symphony No 5 in B flat major

For this concert, we are delighted to welcome back Nicolae Moldeveanu. Nicolae is now resident in Switzerland and has conducted most of the Swiss orchestras as well as many leading orchestras in the UK including: the Royal Liverpool philharmonic, BBC philharmonic and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He is presently Chief Conductor of the Transylvanian State philharmonic Orchestra.
Making her debut with the orchestra is violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen. Tamsin was born in London in 1986. She became a Foundation Scholar at the Royal College of Music where her professor was Itzhak Rashkovsky. At the RCM she won all available awards including the concerto competition twice and was the String Player of the Year. Numerous competition successes include winning the 2005 Royal Overseas League String Prize, and the 2007 J & A Beare Bach competition. She has participated in master classes given by Ida Haendel, Igor Ozim and Ruggiero Ricci, the latter describing her as "the most exceptionally gifted young violinist I have ever encountered". Since 2007 she has played the 1721 ex-Fenyves Stradivarius violin.

To showcase the orchestra's harp and perform and include a concerto written solely for this instrument, we are delighted to welcome one of the UK'S leading harpists - Lucy Wakeford. Lucy studied with Daphne Boden and Marisa Robles at the Royal College of Music and with Gerard Devos in Paris and Skaila Kanga in London and was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust in 1998. During her studies she won top prizes at numerous national and international competitions including 1st Prize at the 1996 Charpentier Competition held in Cardiff and 2nd Prize at the 1988 Tenth International Harp Competition in Israel. As a concerto soloist, Lucy has appeared with the London Symphony Orchestra, Royal philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Guildhall String Ensemble, Ulster Orchestra, City of London Symphonia London Festival Orchestra and BBC Concert Orchestra, among many others.
Making a welcome return to Guernsey is conductor Richard Balcombe. Richard is firmly established as one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. He has been privileged to work with some of the world's leading orchestras including: Gothenburg Symphony, Orchestre National de Lille, Odense Symphony, Stavanger Symphony, Estonian National Symphony, Stockholm Sinfonietta; and in the UK the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Scottish National, English Chamber, Halle, Ulster, National Symphony and the BBC Concert orchestra.

"Northern Lights" 13th November 2010
Programme includes: Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2 and Sibelius Symphony No 2

Making his first appearance with the orchestra to play the dramatic and exciting concerto No. 2 by Shostakovitch is the young virtuoso pianist Oliver Poole. Born in Kent in 1991, Oliver is a pianist and composer with remarkable gifts for improvisation. By the age of eight, he had two EPTA awards as the most promising young pianist in Europe, the title Kent Young Pianist of the Year and had performed with the National Youth Orchestra. At age nine, Oliver went to study with the legendary Russian pianist Lazar Berman in Italy. In 2009 he was awarded the prestigious Founders' Scholarship at the Royal College of Music, London, for piano and composition studies.
Also making his first visit to Guernsey is conductor Jonathan Butcher. Jonathan began conducting during his teenage years and after attending Trinity College of Music as a Junior Exhibitioner, he gained a Foundation Scholarship to the Royal College of Music (RCM) in London. He was awarded the Sir Adrian Boult Conductor's Prize on three successive occasions as well as the Sir Arthur Bliss Prize. Whilst studying at the RCM with Norman Del Mar, he was awarded a Leverhulme Studentship enabling him to go to the Berkshire Music Centre, Tanglewood, USA to study with Bernstein, Andre Previn and Seiji Ozawa. Since then, he has appeared with numerous orchestras both in England and abroad and last summer he made his German debut conducting the Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich's famous Gasteig.
